Description

This Talpa (sofa) was imagined to be a lounger that can perform in both formal and informal setups; the Ista (comfort) comes from its proportioned backrest and armrest which makes this a hybrid between a bed and a seat. Inspired by a traditional “Thinnai” (plinth seat) which was often a facilitator of social interactions; the proportion allows one to lounge on it in any posture. The cushions have been intentionally designed to be loosely inspired by traditional cotton Takia (cotton cushions). The intent is to allow the piece to become inviting to multiple postures; we as Indians are used to. Both the sets of back cushions and bolsters are filled with 100% hypoallergenic Seamal or Kapok is lighter than Kapas Tula (Regular cotton) and is soft to touch like down, yet provides support in a way no synthetic material can match. It is often referred to as “vegan down” completely plant-based and is a revival initiative by us to harness the vernacular knowledge we have unlearnt in the race of Urbanisation. The seat cushions on the other hand have been graded with Kapok (semal) and Kapas Tula (Regular Cotton). This infill ensures that the seats can endure long hours of body weight and do not degrade their integrity. These pieces can always be fluffed after two generations to be re-purposed by them and the material is good to live on forever. The breathability of cotton cushions is just a feature that makes them suitable for a hot and humid climate; they have a natural wicking property that absorbs the sweat of the user. The cushions with their slipcovers allow the piece to be enjoyed in the different moods of the user without inhibitions and guilt. Whether it be a bare bench with no cushion for an earthy feeling or with the cushions for a plush lounging experience, the design is ever accommodating and forgiving.

Care Information

How do you keep your furniture beautiful for many years to come?

Always wipe your furniture with a dry cloth, after cleaning it with a damp cloth.
If you spill any liquid, you should always wipe it off as quickly as possible.
Always use hot pads/mats under hot and/or damp objects.
Always use a firm pad when using sharp utensils.
Protect the surface against scratches from China etc. using felt, for example.
In order to maintain the colour of the wood, you should avoid direct sunlight as far as possible.
Never place furniture close to wood-burningstoves, radiators etc.

Solid wood in general

Wood is a living material that requires proper care and maintenance. The wood reacts in varying degrees depending on the humidity of the surroundings. That is why it is important for wooden furniture to stand in an environment, where the humidity does not fluctuate more than between 40 and 60%. When winter sets in and it is time to switch on the heating, humidity may fall to below 40%. This can cause the wood to shrink a little, but it will expand again once the humidity rises. This comes about because of the evaporation, which is greatest through cross-cut timber. Under these dry conditions, you should make sure that furniture is treated as prescribed with oil. We recommend you purchase a hygrometer to check the humidity in your home. Generally speaking, solid wood is one of nature’s finest materials. It is very durable and has a very long service life. Wood is a natural product, so the texture of the wood may include small knots and colour variations in the finished product. Important: Solid wood is affected by exposure to direct sunlight or direct heat: for example from a wood-burning stove. This may discolour and dry out the wood, causing cracks, for example in table-tops. Never cover solid wood with an oilcloth or something similar for longer than 24 hours at the most.
