Craft defines not only cultural moorings but also the search for economic sustainment. The craftsmen derive their inspiration, innate wisdom, and skills not form books but from nature and their surroundings. Crafts reflect the immense creativity of humble people and their quest for self-expression and fulfillment.
Globalization, open markets, and changing economic borders and barriers have significantly altered the perspective and vision with which handicrafts are viewed today.
Vernacular knowledge was simple solutions to everyday concerns which as a generation we have unlearned while trying to cope with modern necessities.
“The Vernacular Modern” is an initiative by woodlabs which intends to document and re-appropriate vernacular crafts into present urban context.
Our philosophy imbibes the logo representing a “Sankofa Bird” that symbolizes “It is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot”. Taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress through the benevolent use of knowledge.
